Phases

One thing I really don’t like about transitions is how they affect friendships.  I love changing schedules, I love being in new places, but I hate having to say goodbye to old friends and start the process of becoming close to new people.

Unfortunately that happens a lot since I’ve been back and forth between social groups, or between countries, or between jobs.  I’d love to have my group of best friends and just stick with them most of the time, but then there will be times when those people are between things and starting fresh at something and having to meet new people too.

It’s a weird thing to have “phases” with people, where you see your one best friend practically every minute of the day and she knows everything about what you’re doing and you know everything about what she’s doing.  Then one of you gets a new job and the other starts dating someone new, and before you know it you’ve fallen out of sync with each other.  And you have to go through the process of become super close with someone else until you’re phases align again.

I guess this is all a part of “become an adult” and running out of time in each day because of the million little things that you have to take care of now.  They say it takes awhile before you really know who your BEST friends are, the ones you can’t live without.  It’d be nice if those people were here now so I could stop thinking about whether I really have to join a club or sports team to be social.  I’m not really good at crafts or anything with eye-hand coordination.

I think about this a lot, because all of my moving around and continuous uprooting has definitely impacted my social life. Sometimes I wish I had a Sex and the City-esque group of girlfriends, but until I settle down I know that’s never going to happen.

  • Wow, I so feel you on that. So so so true. This whole “becoming an adult” thing is quite challenging at times. And friendship is too. I got 3 stand up, there for me, always got my back friends…… and many many many good time, need me when they are down, here and there associates. You definitely nailed it with this piece.
